Elva’s Old P.O. – Apartment and Studio

The Shumaker Studio

In 2013 the Monhegan Residency Program is providing two new studio/living spaces on the island along with a new, two-week residency especially designed for Maine art teachers. As we have done in the recent past, the five-week residencies are offered in June and September and the shorter two-week residency will take place in July in order to better accommodate the summer schedule of Maine’s art teachers.

Elva’s Old P.O. – Apartment and Studio

Monhegan’s historic post office building is centrally located at the top of Wharf Hill with a large deck overlooking the island meadow. It offers a spacious kitchen and living room on the first floor with bedroom, bath, and studio on the second floor. The apartment and studio share the building with Elva’s Old P.O. gift shop, next door to the Lupine Gallery. The space will be available for the June and July residencies

The Shumaker Studio

This newly renovated cottage is situated across the road from the Trailing Yew Inn near the Monhegan Church. There is a studio/living area in the front, with bedroom, bath, kitchen and deck overlooking one of Monhegan’s prized flower gardens. Over the years, the studio has served the needs of many notable Monhegan artists including Fred Wiley, Don Stone, and Philip Shumaker. The cottage will be site for the Fall residency.

Both residences have internet connections, but no land-line phone access. No pets or smoking please.
