The Miller Cottage and Studio

The Miller Cottage

This charming cottage is ideally situated on a bluff, set well back from the road, between the school house and the Ice Pond. The location is private, yet close to the amenities of the village, and provides a sweeping view of the ocean facing west. It’s a perfect place to observe the cloud formations, the fog drifting in, and best of all, the sunset over the mainland 10 miles away. Built in 1907, this cottage was the home of the artist Alfred Fuller, and for several summers around 1915 was rented by George Bellows, who used the living room as his studio.

Downstairs you will find a well-equipped kitchen with an adjacent small den/office, a dining area overlooking the island of Manana, a powder room, a spacious living room with fireplace and library, and an old square piano which, though out-of-tune, has the distinction of having been played in this house by Sergei Rachmaninoff. French doors open from the living room onto a wrap-around deck.

Upstairs are three bedrooms (queen, double, and single) and a good-sized bathroom with claw-foot tub and hand-held shower. Antiques and original art enhance most rooms. The yard is bordered by evergreens, tall shrubs and apple trees.

Accessibility features include a long boardwalk with handrail leading up to the back door, comfort height toilets, and handrails on both sides of the stairs. The den can be used as a bedroom for someone who can’t climb stairs.

The attached art studio, added in 1940, measures 18 x24 feet and has a cathedral ceiling and north windows overlooking the water.

ALSO PROVIDED:
Limited solar electricity for basic needs such as reading at night and charging devices
Firewood, as long as we continue to be able to get it
A gas heater in the kitchen to take off the chill in cool weather
Axiom fiber optic internet services.
